I recently had the pleasure of engaging in a discussion about Juneteenth with Pennsylvania Representative Donna Bullock. A member of the state House since 2015, Rep. Bullock currently serves as the chair of the state’s legislative Black Caucus. We spoke for a few moments about the history of Juneteenth, celebrations occurring in honor of the holiday and covered some of the priorities of the Caucus. Rep. Bullock also shared her family’s traditions of honoring the holiday and underscored the importance of knowing, talking about and acknowledging history as those moments inform today’s efforts and work.

This conversation with Rep. Bullock made me think about when I connected with Juneteenth. It wasn’t until attending two historically black colleges and universities (or HBCUs) and as I was coming into my adulthood that I began to explore Juneteenth more fully, paying tribute to what it means for me as an African-American woman.

My conversation with Rep. Bullock was very engaging, enlightening and open. I am sincerely appreciative of her time, her insights and her transparency. I hope the recording resonates with those viewing.
